This is my first time posting on the board, and I must admit I'm a little nervous. Go easy on me, people.
I am a public school teacher in my seventh year, as well as a top salesperson for Mary Kay Cosmetics. I am self-motivated, determined, and hard working. Needless to say, I'm a bit concerned that every job posting I've seen requires pharmaceutical or business to business sales experience.

Everyone has a chance. You must show dedication and the attitude that you will not give up until you are hired. I worked for a lawncare company one of the final DM's I interviewed with was in construction. Show your skills sell yourself better than the other candidates and everything else does not matter.
I am not saying it is easy and you won't be feel like you are running your head into a brick wall, but one time the wall will give. Trust me I know.Posted: 9 years # -
It's all about how you present yourself.  You can turn anything into an experience that can make you a better Salesperson.  Mary Kay is an extremely valuable selling experience, I would use that to my advantage.  Sometimes you have to "overlook" the requirements of "actual" b2b sales experience, and do what needs to be done to get in the door.  Above all, don't give up!!!!  Before I became a sales rep, I worked as a manager in food processing plants.  Go figure!!! stranger things have happened!!

For example, did you just lay those little booklets around at work, hoping and praying that someone would call and a place an order?  No, heck you didn't. I'll bet they were strategically placed in the teachers lounge, given to friends, relatives, your calling card was placed on bulletin boards all over your community,etc etc.  And when someone placed an order, you were oh so efficient in getting their order to them on time. And you followed up with the customer to make sure they received what they ordered.. in order.. that you would get repeat business from them.  You conducted parties where your products were featured and this was another sales strategy method you employed.
So, when you really think of it, so many things you have done in teaching and in selling Mary Kay Cosmetics are transferable skills for pharma sales that can be highlighted on your resume. Get thee to a professional resume writer who can play up all your skills in terms of the right keywords to use and you'll be getting all kinds of hits on your resume...and then the interviews will follow.

Definitely. I am not in the US but was a teacher before getting into Pharma, and I have had similar discussions by email with others in the US who have made the transition from teaching to pharma. In fact - I'd say that the teaching experience you have is more important than the sales experience you describe. Think about a typical day - how many times today did you get someone to do something that at first they didn't want to do? You SOLD them the idea of doing what you wanted. And it's not just kids, what about your colleagues and the parents of the children you teach. You take a product (knowledge / skill / behavior / attitude) and make it fit what the customer wants. You SOLD it. Teachers have fantastic organizational skills, can have several tasks or projects on the burner at once - and remember them all. Above all, you know that the "one size" approach does not work - you adapt extremely well to the different needs your customers have. Go thru a school day thinking of the students, their parents and your colleagues as your customers and notice all the things you are doing that are sales skills. Don't forget your willingness to publically address groups without warning, your ability tospot a problem before it exists and so on.
The challenge you face is translating the specific skills you have demonstrated into the interview answers, but if you look thru these pages & see the "typical" star questions, you will easily come up with the goods.

I was a school teacher for almost 8 years. A recruiter taught me these ideas and then when I interviewed i put them in my own words and added examples of each from my own experiences. I got the first pharmaceutical job that I interviewed for. Small company, paid more than my teaching salary and I got a company car. My goal was to stay 2 years and job for the Fortune 500 company. Everything worked according to plan. Here is what the recuiter taught me:
1.Teachers sell "CONCEPTUAL" ideas in the classroom everyday. Pharmaceutical selling is about selling conceptual ideas. In pharmaceutical selling there is not a tangible product, like a carsalesperson, that someone is going to buy from me. just like in teaching, everyday I sell ideas & concepts to the students in my class. There isn't one way to do this, it depends on each individual and I do what it takes for them to understand these "conceptual" ideas. Pharmaceutical selling is similar. A physician does not buy my product from me, instead I sell conceptual ideas to the prescribing physician in order for him/her to picture the type of patient who will benefit from my product.
2. Teachers are motivators. Tell stories about you that relate to this concept and RX selling.
3. Teachers are self-starters. Tell stories about you that relate to this concept and RX selling.
4. Teachers are organized. Tell stories about you that relate to this concept and RX selling.
5. Teachers have to relate to all different kinds of personalities .Tell stories about you that relate to this concept and RX selling.

I have been recruiting for pharma sales for some time now and agree, teachers make great reps. There is one thing though...A majority of the DM/RM's out there are starting to look for people with hard closing ability. This does not mean that you are out of the running, but you need to focus on sales!!! You can use any examples you like...convincing someone in college to do something, implementing programs and persuading people of the upside of using it, etc...I would try to stay away from any retail examples though. If you don't know how to find these examples from your past, ask anyone on this board to help you find them.
