Hi, I'm a newbie and I am loving all the great info on this board. I am a professional and have been a career guy for sometime, HOWEVER, I am new to Pharma and I have a f2f this week. I dont own a dark suit with the exception of a conservative olive green one---I've heard Pharma dress is extremely conservative so I was wondering, if I need to go shopping?.....Also, is it considered an added plus, if you are an employee referral and the employee has a top notch rep? I know it has to matter a little, but I am wondering if it actually weighs in heavier than I may think. In other words do I actually have an edge of some sort---the employee referral came from someone who is a very good friend.

For what it's worth, I would stick to a dark suit. I have always heard that there were advantages to getting into pharma by a referral. I don't think the fact that it is a top producer is going to hurt things at all.Posted: 9 years #

Dark suit seems to be pretty standard. I would not venture to buy a new suit yet. I would make sure it is cleaned and pressed and well tailored. White shirt and conservative tie. The rep referal is like going to a fancy restaurant with valet parking. Your resume/referal has the valet parking. While others are in the general parking lot. Study up on the company and ask your friend what to expect. Best of Luck.

What about when I'm going out to doc offices to network? I have a nice suit, but I'm not sure how I'm going to wear the same thing day after day.

Aram, that would be ok for awhile, but you're going to want to invest in a couple of decent suits fairly soon. This job takes a toll on clothing, what with getting in and out of the car, getting stuff out of the trunk, carrying in large trays containing MOUNTAINS o'Hoagies and greasy chips, etc.
Another thing to keep in mind that down here in our neck of the woods (southern US), many male reps don't wear jackets in the summertime. It's just too hot, and if you walk in with your coat on, the docs peg you as a rookie immediately. They'll laugh heartily, you'll sweat profusely, and the whole situation will be most uncomfortable. These are very practical advices when I'm about to go out and network!
I have two pairs of two piece suits.
I guess on a casual June summer day, I would walk in with a shirt, tie, and the dress pants? Would that be something I can wear? Also, do I bring the jacket along in the morning or leave it at home?

tofoo, always, always bring your jacket with you on the road. It doesn't take up too much space and it never hurts to be prepared. I live in the North East and we are a bit more conservative up here. I would never think of walking into a sales appt w/o my jacket unless it was 110 degrees.Posted: 8 years #

CT, you should spend a summer in the Carolinas with us. Average summer temp is around 95 with a nice dose of 100% humidity. Believe me, the only people around here who wear jackets during the summer are Merck robots and Pfizer reps who are terrified another Pfizer person may see them without their coat! OTOH, I do carry my jackets in the car, just in case.

Yeah Bunky, it is alot warmer down in your neck of the woods. I don't think it's hit 80 up here yet. I always have my jacket but rarely wear it in the car. Once you have established a repoir with the client it doesn't matter what you wear. You make an interesting point though, if it's hot as hell and you are wearing a jacket you probably look silly. I'm going to ask around to see what industry standards are here. It couldn't be that different, North Carolina is considered part of New England in spirit. ;-)Posted: 8 years #

Original poster, regarding the referral. It has done it's job & got your foot int he door. Now its up to you to get the rest of you in as well. It may also work in terms of avoiding getting thrown out - if there is some niggling little thing that worries the interviewer / hirer and your connection can clear it up for them, then you may never even know it existed.
On the other hand, your referral can work for you in another way. Rather than what they can tell the company about you, what can they tell you about the company. What therapeutic areas are the openings likely to be in? (they just became a major interest of yours for that question about "why this industry?"). What really puts the interviwer off? Where is this company's future? What does the company expect from its reps over the first few years? (useful when you are answering the "where do you see yourself in 3 years?" questions) Basically, they can help you show that you FIT thecompany & the position. Much more useful to you than "yeah, he's a good guy. I'd hire him", and best of all, your contact hasn't had to put their reputation on the line to help you out.Posted: 8 years # -

weather...ha...i just moved from Raleigh to TX. Temp is not much different...maybe 5 - 10 degrees higher, low humidity, but man, it feels like i'm actually sitting in an oven. I am trying to break into this industry & must admit that one of the things I was considered was having to wear a suit during the summer. That might sound silly, but I live in the New Orleans area. Summer for us is brutal, average temp is around 95-100. But when you factor in the 110% humity it seems much worse. It's like being in a sauna, oh well say la ve!! ;-)Posted: 8 years #

I was told to wear a white shirt....but the 1st interview I had the guy wore a dark blue shirt. The next interview I had was a DM and he had a striped white shirt...the 3rd interview the next DM had a plum? color shirt on. What gives? I usually go by what they wear...when I saw the 1st guy with a blue shirt, I wore a blue shirt the next time.
